During my time as a Math educator at Olive Peirce Middle School I was able to participate in various professional development experiences:
When I first started working at Olive Peirce Middle School I participated in several district training's for the implementation of new curriculum. I was able to plan/implement brand new common core curriculum with other 8th grade math educators on campus. This was a valuable experience as even though I was the only new math teacher on campus, all educators were implementing a new curriculum that had not been done before. I was able to work with other math educators to implement the Common Core Springboard curriculum.
Throughout the year all teachers participated in an in-depth study of the work of John Hattie. This ultimately changed the way all teachers created/ implemented lessons in the classroom. The main focus of John Hattie centered on Success Criteria and Learning Intentions. Success Criteria provides students with a checklist of all the concepts that they will need to master in order to meet the overall Learning Target or Learning Intention. It is not enough to just tell students what they are learning and what they should know. It is important to break down the standards into Learning Intentions and further break down the Learning Intentions into a checklist that allows all students to understand what they are doing, why they are doing it, and how they can reach the overall goal (Standards). This experience was very valuable in my growth as a math educator this year.
With other math educators, I was able to participate in district training's surrounding the Common Core Smarter Balanced State Testing. I was able to gain valuable experience in testing procedures, and I was able to successfully proctor the test with all of my students.
