On April 18th, 2014 I was able to visit Carlsbad High School. During our visit, I was able to sit in a conversation lead by the Gay/Straight Alliance club. It was very valuable because several students who are a part of this club spoke with us about their stories and what they feel a teacher should do to show support and equity for all students, especially students with different sexual affiliations.
As a teacher, it is extremely important to treat all students with equity and give all students an equal opportunity in education. The students stated something very interesting in this presentation. Their request was that teachers don't have to change their beliefs, they just need to change their behaviors. Even if teachers do not agree with the beliefs of people and students in the LGBTQI community, it is important that they do not show it or express it in the classroom. As a teacher, it is important that you provide a safe and inclusive environment for all of your students, regardless of their sexuality or their beliefs.
I have been very active in supporting the LGBTQI community, especially students. Even though I am heterosexual, I have always supported this community because everyone deserves to love who they want to love. As a teacher, it is extremely important for me to show this support for my students so that I can be a support system for these students and fellow co-workers. It is also important because teachers are role-models, and I want to ensure that I am being the best role-model possible for my future students.
As a teacher, it is also important to educate yourself and your students on the awareness of issues facing LGBTQI students. Teachers and students need to be aware of all the inequality that students/people in this community face so that change can happen. Change can't happen if people are not aware of what is truly happening.
Overall, I greatly enjoyed this presentation. It was great to see a presentation presented by students themselves, as students are the most important part of our job as teachers. From these students, I have learned that students in this community are not asking teachers to change their beliefs, they are just asking teachers to change their behaviors in the classroom. This is very important so that all students, especially these students, feel inclusive and equal in the classroom. Teachers also need to educate themselves of all the issues facing these students so that they can gain awareness. Most importantly, teachers need to ensure that all students, regardless of their affiliations or beliefs, receive equal educational opportunities. These students also stressed the importance of having role models in their teachers, and having teachers that fit in this community that they can look up to is a huge help for them.
